His every wish, his every dream, was that some day he could be like his older brothers. A valiant warrior, a champion among men, that's what Jorem wanted to be. To be respected by others and loved by his father the King. Faced with decisions that could affect an entire kingdom he must choose between the comforts of life in a castle and the grueling work of a blacksmith's servant. He'll do this, if not for his family, at least for the people the royal house should be serving. In the refiners forge he discovers his own metal even when faced with the anger and contempt of a people who have come to distrust those of royal blood. Alone he may be, but through his determination and the wisdom gained from an old man Jorem stands his ground. He finds that becoming a man isn't about a title and prestige, sometimes it's just doing the right thing.

I haven't enjoyed a series as much as I did this one in a long time. Stands out as a gem amidst a lot of muck. Only flaw for me was abrupt ending of 2nd book and the fact there aren't more after the 3rd book (yet she says hopefully). Loved how the protagonist sweats and earns his achievments and all the positive life lessons along the way. Also loved that I never once felt preached at by said life lessons - what I felt was enlightened and empowered. I am so sick of dreary, negative, angsty post-apocalyptic drek - what a pleasure to read something positve. Not that exciting (and awful) things don't happen to the main character - they do. It's the characters point of view that makes this such a stand out for me. I devoured all 3 books and then got on Amazon and bought my own copies.

HONOR BOUND The Spare Heir Book 1 eBook Michael G Southwick Keith Leatham Cindy Southwick Reviews

I enjoyed this little story, but I'd have enjoyed it more if the flow wasn't broken by the numerous instances of lack of proofreading -- incl. some kind-of-hilarious homonyms. (I read the teaser for book 2, and it's no better the very first paragraph compares the sky to a canape -- s/b canopy, of course, as I realized after a double-take!) I marked them all, and when I get back to my PC (I read it in for Android) I'll see if MGS provided a contact email. So, anyway, the likable protagonist and "storytelling" w/b ****, averaged with ** for the editing, making it ***. BTW, the stars to me equate to F, D, C, B, A, so that's still passing, especially for folks more error-tolerant than I am.
First, I found the writing style very obvious, unoriginal and tedious. I only finished it because I paid for the darned thing. Problem number two surely the author can find another descriptive word to use other than "amazing". Which was used numerous times. A thesaurus is a very handy writing companion if needed. Another problem with the story was that it seemed mired in minutiae; nothing of substance ever seems to really happen. And then I think the biggest problem became obvious about halfway through, and that was the lack of decent character development. Maybe this was a glaring flaw to me since I had just recently re-read Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan saga, as well as Robin Hobb's Assassin series, both of which are supremely character-driven.
There are no surprises in this story, really. Southwick rather bravely decides that his characters are sympathetic and interesting enough and his world-building deep enough that they can hold the reader's attention even if the plot doesn't resort to third-act twists or false mystery to trick you into thinking it's deeper than it is.

And... well, it was a good gamble. The characters are interesting enough that watching them walk a pretty linear path from point A to point B that's fairly predictable is actually fun and makes for a great little coming-of-age story in the vein of old-school fairy tales and with a cheerful tone that makes it stand out in a genre where 80% of protagonists are trying to be Wolverine. I definitely recommend this one.
Nothing very new about this book; another coming of age tale. But it is written in an engaging style and holds a readers interest. I found a lot of it hard to believe... a totally neglected 5th son of the king seemingly just left to his own devices...a wizard as his tutor/companion...totally vile brothers...and our angelic protaganist. Too black and white for me...no depth to most characters. It ends awkwardly...it is as if this story was just chopped off of a larger novel.... a teaser ending o entice buying the sequel, which is half as long (check its reviews) as this first installment. BUT having said all that I will for some reason buy the sequel...cuz I like the maturing hero? The writing style appeals to me? I dont really know. Maybe it's just that it's so hard to find a decent fantasy book....in any event I give it a belated "thumbs up".
This review applies to the three books and put together they are about the length of most fantasy novels. This is a children's book, not adult and not YA. Once you understand that you can make a decision whether or nor to purchase it. I gave it two stars because I had realized what I was buying. That's my fault, not the book's.. As I do not normally read children's book I cannot comment on how good it is compared to other examples of the genre. It is a happy book. All the good guys come out alright, all the bad guys lose. There is no sex or romance and then author feels compelled to remind the reader whenever reference is made to something that happened earlier. I think most adults will do a lot of skimming.
This has to be one of the best books I have read in a long time. I ordered the sample and after the first chapter, I knew I had to purchase this book. Half way through, I stopped to determine if there was a sequel. There was; I bought it. I rarely buy anything without reading the sample first. Too many books start out good and then fizzle out. This is an excellent read from beginning to end.
I thoroughly enjoyed the lead characters (Jorem) development. Our spare heir starts out as a scrawny and clumsy kid and slowly develops into a young man. Our character is intelligent with good morals, strong ethics, and a willingness to work hard to achieve his dream.
The story line is well developed but needs a thorough editing.
The story is very good with bits of humor mixed in. The author proves you do not need a lot of action to produce and present a great story.
This is not the worst in regards to grammar; however, there are too many areas where it ends abruptly in mid sentence with a box and a period. It is impossible to determine what the author was going to say. Even with these issues, it is a wonderful story.
You cannot go wrong in buying this book. You WILL be entertained. I am expecting great things from the author.
